Who you’re talking to

I’m Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC. Over 25 years I’ve worked with trauma, anxiety, and relationships — from Red Crescent refugee camps and veterans’ clinics to community mental health here in Vancouver. I won’t be shocked by what you bring me, and I won’t rush you.

As an Iranian-Canadian clinician working in both English and Farsi, I understand the weight of آبرو, the pull between cultures, and how hard it can be to say “I need help” out loud. We go at your pace, find what’s really driving things, and work through it together.

Frequently Asked Questions — ADHD & Focus

Does neurofeedback help with ADHD and focus issues?
It can, as one layer of a plan. Neurofeedback training gives attention networks repeated, real-time practice at holding the state you want; Samuel offers it alongside ADHD-specific counselling and coping systems for adults with focus, executive-function and burnout difficulties. The research is mixed — a 2019 review found gains that lasted six months, a 2024 meta-analysis found no significant effect on the strictest ratings — and Samuel presents it exactly that way: a reasonable, low-risk component, never a stand-alone cure.
Is neurofeedback covered by insurance?
Neurofeedback training is offered as part of a counselling plan with Samuel, a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and counselling sessions are covered by most extended health plans and direct-billed. Fees and expenses are covered by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Samuel goes through your specific coverage on the free 20-minute call before you book.
Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to start?
No. You can begin working on focus, executive function or burnout from a counselling assessment of how attention and time are actually behaving in your life. If a formal diagnosis or medication review would help, Samuel coordinates with your family doctor or a psychiatrist and will say so plainly.
How many neurofeedback sessions are typical?
A course is typically 20 to 40 sessions over a few months, two or three a week at the start, running alongside counselling. The counselling and coping-systems layer usually takes shape over 8 to 12 weekly sessions. Samuel sets the expected course with you on the free call and reviews it openly as you go.
What is the difference between ‘focus issues’ and ADHD?
Focus problems have many causes — poor sleep, anxiety, burnout, depression, a concussion, a nervous system braced by trauma — and ADHD is one of them. Part of the first session is working out which you are dealing with, because the plan differs: burnout needs recovery and boundaries; anxiety needs its own treatment; ADHD needs systems and skills that do not depend on working memory. Samuel treats all of these in the same practice.
Can adults with ADHD be treated without medication?
Yes. For adults who cannot take stimulants, had side effects, are pregnant, or find medication only covers half the day, Samuel builds three layers: ADHD-specific cognitive-behavioural counselling, external coping systems, and neurofeedback training. Nothing closes the door to medication later. See Adult ADHD Treatment Without Medication in Vancouver.
What does an ADHD and focus plan look like week by week?
Weeks one to two map the actual day; weeks two to six install a small number of external systems, one at a time, tested against a real workweek; weeks three to twelve are the counselling layer — procrastination that is really fear, emotional flooding, the harsh inner narrator; and neurofeedback training runs in parallel from about week three. Samuel described a full course in this post.
Are ADHD and focus sessions available in Farsi?
Yes — counselling, systems-building and neurofeedback training are all available in Farsi as well as English. Many Iranian-Canadian adults have called their ADHD ‘بی‌نظمی’ or ‘تنبلی’ for years; naming it correctly is the first relief. جلسات به فارسی برگزار می‌شود.
Where do sessions take place?
Counselling in person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver or by secure video anywhere in British Columbia; neurofeedback training in person only. Evening and weekend appointments are available.
How do I start?

More questions about ADHD and focus in Vancouver

Why can’t I focus even when I know what I need to do?
Because knowing and doing run on different systems. Task initiation, working memory and time perception are executive functions, and when they are under strain — from ADHD, exhaustion or a braced nervous system — willpower alone cannot bridge the gap. The plan builds systems that fire automatically instead of relying on effort.
Is my focus problem ADHD or burnout?
Often both, and the order matters. Burnout produces ADHD-like attention problems in people who never had them, and ADHD makes burnout more likely because compensating costs so much. Samuel’s first session separates the two so the plan starts in the right place.
Can anxiety cause focus problems?
Yes — an anxious mind is already busy. When anxiety is the driver, treating the anxiety (CBT, IFS, sometimes neurofeedback training for the physiological side) restores focus without an ADHD label. When both are present, Samuel treats them together.
Can neurofeedback training help with focus after a concussion?
It is used for post-concussion attention, irritability and sleep problems alongside medical care and counselling. If the injury followed a car crash, ICBC covers counselling on an active claim. Samuel coordinates with your doctor and never replaces medical follow-up. See ICBC counselling in Vancouver.
What are the coping systems that actually work for ADHD?
External, low-friction ones: a single capture point for every task, a visible weekly plan, time-boxing with a physical timer, a launch pad by the door, and body-doubling for tasks you keep avoiding. Systems that need you to remember to use them are discarded.
What does a neurofeedback session feel like?
Quiet and slightly boring, which is the point. Sensors read your brain’s electrical activity; software turns it into feedback — a film that brightens, a game that advances — when your attention networks are in the target range. Sessions are about 30 minutes; the most common side effect is feeling tired after early sessions. Nothing is sent into the brain.
Can ADHD therapy help my partner and me?
Yes. When ADHD has turned one partner into the household’s executive function, resentment builds on both sides; Samuel integrates Gottman-based couples sessions into ADHD care when that is where the pain is. See couples and family therapy.
Does the ADHD shame ever go away?
It softens considerably. Decades of ‘why can’t you just…’ build a harsh inner critic, and Samuel uses IFS to work with it as a part with a protective job rather than a verdict. Adults often notice this shift before the attention itself changes.
Can I combine this with medication I already take?
Yes. Systems, counselling and neurofeedback training stack with stimulants or non-stimulants; many clients use medication for the workday and this plan for evenings, relationships and the emotional side. Samuel’s doctorate-level understanding of medication makes those conversations informed ones, in coordination with your prescriber.
Do you see students with focus problems?
Yes — university and college students are a large part of the practice, especially in first year when school’s structure falls away. Video sessions across BC and evening times fit around classes.
Is neurofeedback safe?
It is non-invasive and quiet — sensors read activity, software feeds it back; nothing is transmitted into the brain. The most common side effect is tiredness after early sessions. Samuel screens for conditions where a slower approach is wise and adjusts accordingly.
What if I’ve tried apps, planners and coaching and nothing stuck?
That is the usual history, and it is not a failure of effort. Tools that depend on remembering to use them fail for the same reason the planner did. The difference here is treating the emotional layer that sabotages systems, and installing systems that fire on their own.
How is Samuel’s approach to ADHD and focus different?
Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC, combines ADHD-specific counselling, IFS, neurofeedback training and 25 years of trauma-informed practice in one small, no-gatekeeper practice — because a nervous system braced for the next failure learns slowly, and lowering that bracing is what makes the skills stick. See ADHD therapy in Vancouver for the full picture.
How soon can I be seen?
Usually within days. The first conversation is 20 minutes by phone, free, and you reach Samuel directly. Call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604 or text a line and he will call you back.
Where can I read more?

Ready to talk? Your first 20 minutes are free. Call or text any day between 9am and 9pm — I respond within a couple of hours.
