What a crash does that the repair bill does not show

Driving anxiety and avoidance

Bracing at intersections, taking longer routes, refusing the highway, or not driving at all. Often the first thing to appear and the last to be mentioned.

PTSD and intrusive memories

Flashbacks, nightmares, the sound of the impact arriving unannounced. Treated with EMDR, which is well established for accident-related trauma.

Sleep, mood and concentration

Broken sleep, irritability, low mood, and the fog that follows a concussion — compounded by pain and a recovery that is taking longer than anyone promised.

How it works

1

Get your claim number

File your claim with ICBC. You will receive a claim number — that plus your Personal Health Number is all that is needed.

2

Call for twenty minutes

Free, no obligation, and you reach me directly. We check what you are entitled to and whether I am the right fit.

3

Start — I bill ICBC

Sessions are billed directly to ICBC within their set rate. No invoices, no reimbursement forms, no balance owing.

Questions people actually ask about ICBC counselling

Does ICBC pay for counselling after a car accident?

Yes. Under Enhanced Care, ICBC pre-approves counselling as part of early treatment after a crash. You do not need to prove fault, and you do not need a diagnosis before you start. See ICBC’s treatment and recovery benefits at icbc.com.

How many counselling sessions does ICBC cover?

Up to 12 pre-approved sessions. If you still need support after that, your counsellor can request an extension from your ICBC recovery team, usually supported by a report and often a recommendation from your doctor.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No — not for the pre-approved sessions in the first 12 weeks. Before April 2019 a referral was required; under the current rules you can book directly. After the initial period, an extension request generally does need medical support.

What do I need to book?

Your ICBC claim number, and your Personal Health Number. That is genuinely it. If your claim number has not come through yet, call anyway and we will start the paperwork.

How much does it cost me?

Nothing, when the sessions are billed within ICBC’s set rate. ICBC pays a maximum amount per session directly to the provider. I bill ICBC directly and work within that rate, so there is no balance for you to pay and no receipts to chase.

What is the 12-week rule?

The pre-approval applies to counselling started within 12 weeks — 84 days — of the crash. The point is to begin inside that window. Starting early also matters clinically: trauma responses are easier to treat before they consolidate.

What if more than 12 weeks have already passed?

You can still get counselling. It moves from automatic pre-approval to an approval request through your adjuster, usually with a recommendation from your doctor. Say so on the first call and we will work out the route.

What does ICBC counselling actually treat?

Driving anxiety and avoidance, panic, intrusive memories and flashbacks, nightmares and broken sleep, irritability and anger, low mood, concentration problems, post-concussion symptoms, and the frustration of a slow recovery.

I was not badly hurt physically. Do I still qualify?

Yes. Psychological injury is not proportional to vehicle damage. Minor collisions produce serious anxiety and PTSD often enough that it is unremarkable clinically.

Can I do the sessions online?

Yes. Video sessions are available across British Columbia, which matters when driving is exactly the thing that has become difficult.

Was the accident my fault? Does that matter?

No. Enhanced Care treatment benefits are not fault-based. Coverage does not depend on who caused the crash.

I was a passenger, cyclist or pedestrian.

Coverage is not limited to drivers. Passengers, cyclists and pedestrians injured in a crash in British Columbia can access the same treatment benefits.

Can I see a counsellor and a physiotherapist at the same time?

Yes. Counselling sits alongside physiotherapy, massage, kinesiology and chiropractic care within your treatment benefits. They are separate allocations.

Will ICBC see my session notes?

No. ICBC receives what it needs to administer the claim — that treatment occurred, and clinical reporting where required. The content of what you say in session is not handed over. I explain the exact limits in plain language in the first session.

Does counselling affect my settlement or claim?

Attending counselling is a treatment benefit, not an admission of anything. If you have questions about your claim itself, that is a matter for your adjuster or a lawyer — I do not give claims advice.

Are sessions available in Farsi?

Yes. Sessions run fully in Farsi, fully in English, or move between the two. جلسات به فارسی نیز برگزار می‌شود.

What happens in the first session?

We look at what changed after the crash — sleep, driving, mood, concentration, pain — and agree what to work on. Trauma treatment usually means EMDR, which is well established for accident-related PTSD.

How soon can I be seen?

Usually within days. The first conversation is twenty minutes by phone, free, and you reach me directly — no receptionist and no intake forms before we have spoken.

My English is limited and the process is confusing.

That is common and it is not a barrier. Bring your claim number to the first call and we will go through what you are entitled to, in Farsi or English.

What if I have already used my 12 sessions elsewhere?

Then we look at an extension request, or at your extended health coverage, which often covers counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor independently of ICBC.

Start before the twelve weeks run out

The pre-approval window is 84 days from the crash. Starting inside it is easier clinically and simpler administratively. The first conversation is twenty minutes, free, in English or Farsi.
