You shouldn’t have to translate your pain.
If you have ever sat across from a therapist and found yourself searching for the English word for something that only makes sense in Farsi — taarof, gheirat, aberoo, the weight of being the eldest son or daughter, the grief of leaving Iran, the silence in your family about mental health — you already know why a Farsi-speaking counsellor matters.
You don’t just need someone who speaks the language. You need someone who understands the culture without you having to teach it.
Dr. Samuel is a Persian-speaking psychotherapist in Vancouver who works with Iranian-Canadians, recent immigrants from Iran, second-generation Persian families, and mixed-culture couples navigating identity, family expectations, and emotional pain that doesn’t always fit Western frameworks.
Who Dr. Samuel Helps
- Persian-Canadians caught between two cultures, two sets of expectations, and two definitions of success.
- Recent Iranian immigrants processing immigration grief, language stress, professional re-credentialling, and isolation.
- Iranian couples rebuilding intimacy after years of conflict, infidelity, or the slow drift that comes with immigration stress.
- Persian families navigating generational conflict — parents who came for their children’s future, children who are now too “Western” for their parents.
- Iranian women processing the weight of family duty, gendered expectations, and unspoken trauma.
- Iranian men who were taught not to talk about their feelings — and are quietly struggling.
- Anyone who has been told “just pray more” or “don’t bring this outside the family” but knows they need real help.
Why a Farsi-Speaking Therapist Actually Matters
Mental health research consistently shows that culturally matched therapy produces better outcomes — clients drop out less, open up faster, and recover sooner when their therapist understands their cultural framework. For Persian and Iranian clients in Vancouver, this matters even more, because:
- Mental health stigma is real in Persian culture. Many clients have spent years being told that therapy is for “crazy people” or that family business stays in the family. Walking into Dr. Samuel’s office, you don’t have to explain or defend that struggle — he understands it.
- Some emotions don’t translate. Concepts like delam tang shode, ghorbat, the specific weight of aberoo, or the layered meaning of family honour cannot be properly explored in English. They lose half their meaning.
- Trauma in Persian families is often intergenerational. Revolution, war, migration, political fear — these don’t disappear just because you crossed a border. They show up in your body, your relationships, and your children. A therapist who knows this history doesn’t need a 20-minute primer.
- Cultural code-switching is exhausting. If you spend all week translating yourself for your Canadian colleagues, your therapy hour shouldn’t require more translation. It should be the one place you can fully be yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Farsi Counselling in Vancouver
Is Dr. Samuel actually fluent in Farsi, or is it just a marketing claim?
Yes, Dr. Samuel is fully fluent in Farsi (Persian). Sessions can be conducted entirely in Farsi, entirely in English, or mixed — whatever helps you express yourself best. Many clients switch between the two within a single sentence, and that is completely welcome.
Will my family find out I am seeing a therapist?
No. All sessions are completely confidential under BC law. Dr. Samuel cannot share any information about you with your family, partner, employer, or community without your explicit written consent. This includes not confirming whether you are even a client.
Do you work with clients from Iran, or only Iranian-Canadians?
Both. Dr. Samuel works with recent immigrants from Iran, long-settled Iranian-Canadians, second-generation Persian-Canadians, international students, and mixed-heritage clients. Online sessions are available for clients anywhere in British Columbia.
Is Persian counselling covered by insurance or government programs?
Many sessions are covered. Dr. Samuel is accepted by Fraser Health referrals, the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) for those affected by crime, the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), and ICBC for motor-vehicle-related care. Most extended health insurance plans also cover registered clinical counselling. Please ask during your free 20-minute call.
What if I am not sure whether I need therapy or just need to talk to someone?
That is exactly what the free 20-minute consultation is for. There is no pressure to commit. Many people just need help figuring out whether they need help — and that is a perfectly good reason to call.
Do you offer counselling for couples where one partner speaks Farsi and the other does not?
Yes. Mixed-language couples are welcome and common in our practice. Sessions can be conducted in English with cultural context provided, or alternated between Farsi and English depending on what each partner needs.
What kinds of issues do Persian and Iranian clients usually come in for?
The most common issues we see include immigration grief, generational family conflict, anxiety and depression, marital and couples issues, identity confusion (especially in second-generation clients), trauma from Iran’s political history, perfectionism and academic pressure, and reconciling religious or cultural expectations with personal happiness.
Is therapy “Western” — will it conflict with my Persian or Iranian values?
No. Good therapy works within your value system, not against it. Dr. Samuel does not impose Western individualism on clients who hold collectivist family values, and he does not pathologize cultural practices. The goal is to help you live more fully within the values that are actually yours — not to replace them.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Most new clients are seen within 48 hours. Free 20-minute consultations are usually available the same day or next day.
Where is the office located?
1500 West Georgia Street, in downtown Vancouver, BC. Online sessions are also available throughout British Columbia for clients in Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, Langley, and beyond.
