Anger treatment has a solid track record

A meta-analysis of 96 studies reported that “the overall weighted standardized mean difference across all treatments was 0.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67-0.85 …), which suggests that psychological treatments are generally effective in treating anger” (Saini, 2009, p. 473). A later review of meta-analyses concluded that “anger treatments have consistently demonstrated at least moderate effectiveness among both non-clinical and psychiatric populations” (Lee & DiGiuseppe, 2018, p. 65).

What anger counselling in Vancouver looks like here

Session one. What sets the anger off, what it protects, what it costs (at home, at work, in your body), and whether sleep, stress, trauma or alcohol are feeding it.

The method. Cognitive behavioural work is the backbone; reviewers found that “cognitive behavioral treatments are the most commonly disseminated intervention for both anger and aggression” (Lee & DiGiuseppe, 2018, p. 65). DBT emotion-regulation skills and Internal Family Systems are added where anger sits on older hurt. Structure matters: variability in results was partly explained by “the number of treatment sessions offered to participants, the use of manuals to guide delivery of the treatment, the use of fidelity checks” (Saini, 2009, p. 473).

Common reasons people come

Blow-ups a partner has called time on; road rage; anger at work that is putting a job at risk; irritability since an injury, a crash or a trauma. Couples sessions are available when the anger lives in the relationship (see couples counselling).

Frequently asked questions

Does anger management counselling work?
Yes. Across 96 studies, results “suggest that psychological treatments are generally effective in treating anger” (Saini, 2009, p. 473).
Which approach is used for anger?
Cognitive behavioural therapy is the most established: “cognitive behavioral treatments are the most commonly disseminated intervention for both anger and aggression” (Lee & DiGiuseppe, 2018, p. 65). DBT skills and IFS are added as needed.
Is anger the same as aggression?
No. The research separates them: anger treatments show “at least moderate effectiveness,” “whereas aggression treatment results have been less consistent” (Lee & DiGiuseppe, 2018, p. 65). If there is any risk of harm, safety is addressed first.
How many sessions does it take?
It depends on the person; the free call gives a realistic estimate. Session number was one factor that explained differences in results across studies (Saini, 2009).
Is anger counselling covered by insurance in BC?
Fees and expenses are covered by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Most extended-health plans reimburse RCC sessions.
Can my partner come too?
Yes, when it helps. Individual anger work and Gottman/IFS couples sessions can run side by side.
