Anger treatment has a solid track record
A meta-analysis of 96 studies reported that “the overall weighted standardized mean difference across all treatments was 0.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67-0.85 …), which suggests that psychological treatments are generally effective in treating anger” (Saini, 2009, p. 473). A later review of meta-analyses concluded that “anger treatments have consistently demonstrated at least moderate effectiveness among both non-clinical and psychiatric populations” (Lee & DiGiuseppe, 2018, p. 65).
What anger counselling in Vancouver looks like here
Session one. What sets the anger off, what it protects, what it costs (at home, at work, in your body), and whether sleep, stress, trauma or alcohol are feeding it.
The method. Cognitive behavioural work is the backbone; reviewers found that “cognitive behavioral treatments are the most commonly disseminated intervention for both anger and aggression” (Lee & DiGiuseppe, 2018, p. 65). DBT emotion-regulation skills and Internal Family Systems are added where anger sits on older hurt. Structure matters: variability in results was partly explained by “the number of treatment sessions offered to participants, the use of manuals to guide delivery of the treatment, the use of fidelity checks” (Saini, 2009, p. 473).
Common reasons people come
Blow-ups a partner has called time on; road rage; anger at work that is putting a job at risk; irritability since an injury, a crash or a trauma. Couples sessions are available when the anger lives in the relationship (see couples counselling).
