The Gottman Method is one of the most researched approaches to couples therapy in the world — built on more than 40 years of studying what actually keeps relationships strong. At Dr. Samuel’s downtown Vancouver practice, Gottman-informed couples therapy is offered in English and Farsi, in person and online.
What Is the Gottman Method?
Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the method is grounded in decades of research with thousands of couples. The Gottmans were able to predict relationship outcomes with high accuracy by observing how partners handle conflict and connection. The therapy translates those findings into practical, learnable skills — it is structured, goal-oriented, and warm.
Does This Sound Familiar?
You have the same argument over and over without ever resolving it. Conversations slide into criticism, defensiveness, contempt, or shutting down. You feel more like roommates than partners. Parenting, in-laws, or money keep pulling you apart. You still love each other — you just cannot find your way back to closeness. Gottman therapy gives you a map.
The Four Horsemen — and the Antidotes
Gottman research identified four communication patterns that predict relationship breakdown: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. The good news is that each has a specific, teachable antidote — gentle start-up, building a culture of appreciation, taking responsibility, and self-soothing. A large part of the work is learning to spot these patterns in the moment and shift out of them together.
The Sound Relationship House
The Gottman Method builds a relationship like a house, level by level: building love maps (truly knowing each other’s inner world), sharing fondness and admiration, turning toward instead of away, managing conflict, making life dreams come true, and creating shared meaning. We assess where the strain is and rebuild from there.
What to Expect
Gottman therapy usually begins with an assessment — a joint session followed by individual conversations — so we understand your relationship’s strengths and pain points before setting goals together. From there, sessions are practical: you learn and practise skills you can use at home, not just talk about problems. The aim is a shift in how conflicts feel — from gridlock toward real dialogue.
Gottman Therapy for Iranian-Canadian Couples
For bicultural and Iranian-Canadian couples, conflict is often layered with cultural expectation, in-law dynamics, gender roles, and the stress of building a life between two worlds. Dr. Samuel offers Gottman-informed therapy in Farsi and English, with a genuine understanding of these pressures — including آبرو, family loyalty, and intergenerational difference.

Who you’re talking to
I’m Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC. Over 25 years I’ve worked with trauma, anxiety, and relationships — from Red Crescent refugee camps and veterans’ clinics to community mental health here in Vancouver. I won’t be shocked by what you bring me, and I won’t rush you.
As an Iranian-Canadian clinician working in both English and Farsi, I understand the weight of آبرو, the pull between cultures, and how hard it can be to say “I need help” out loud. We go at your pace, find what’s really driving things, and work through it together.
And no — your problem doesn’t need to be a crisis to belong here. Most of the people Samuel sees are simply tired, stuck, or quietly carrying something heavy.

Ask anything: fees, insurance, whether this approach fits you. Completely confidential.
Book a first session — or don’t. Either way you leave with clarity and zero obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gottman Method Couples Therapy
Can I start Gottman couples therapy on my own if my partner won’t come?
Yes, and it is more common than you would think. Individual sessions help you understand the dynamic you are both caught in and change your own moves in it, which often makes it easier to invite your partner in later. Many couples begin with just one person willing to try.
Is it too late for us?
Rarely. The Gottman Method is research-based and works even for couples in serious distress, as long as both people are willing to engage. The free first consultation is where Samuel assesses honestly whether it is a good fit — and says so if it is not.
How long does Gottman couples therapy take?
It varies. Therapy begins with an assessment phase — a joint session, a brief individual conversation with each partner, and a look at how you handle conflict — then moves to focused sessions on your specific goals. Some couples see meaningful change in a few months; couples arriving after years of gridlock or after an affair usually continue longer. The pace is set together and reviewed openly.
Do you offer couples sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Samuel offers Gottman-informed couples therapy in both English and Farsi, with an understanding of the cultural dynamics many Iranian-Canadian couples navigate — in-laws, family expectations, and one partner settling into Canada faster than the other.
Is the first consultation really free?
Yes. Your first 20-minute phone consultation is free, confidential, and no-pressure — a chance to say what is happening and hear whether this approach is right for you. Call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604, or text a line and Samuel will call you back.
What is the Gottman Method, in plain terms?
It is a structured approach to couples therapy built on four decades of research into what actually predicts whether relationships last. Rather than general talking, it assesses your relationship against known predictors — how you argue, how you repair, how much genuine friendship is left — and then teaches specific, practised skills for the parts that are failing. Samuel uses it as the backbone of couples work in Vancouver, in English and Farsi.
Is the Gottman Method evidence-based?
Yes. It rests on longitudinal studies of thousands of couples that identified the behaviours predicting separation with high accuracy, and on clinical trials of the interventions that reverse them. It is one of the most researched couples approaches available. Samuel is candid that no method rescues a relationship where one partner has already left emotionally — but for couples still willing to engage, the evidence is strong.
What are the ‘Four Horsemen’ and why do they matter?
Criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling — the four patterns Gottman research found most predictive of separation. Contempt is the strongest predictor of all. Most couples show at least one; the therapy is not about never doing them again but about recognising them early and using the antidotes: gentle start-up, building a culture of appreciation, taking responsibility, and self-soothing instead of shutting down.
Are Gottman couples sessions billed like regular counselling?
Yes. Gottman-informed couples therapy is delivered by Samuel as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, so it is covered by most extended health plans in BC in the same way as any RCC session. Fees and expenses are covered by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Samuel confirms your specific coverage on the free call.
Where do Gottman couples sessions take place?
In person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, or by secure video anywhere in British Columbia. Evening and weekend appointments are available. Couples from North Vancouver, Burnaby and West Vancouver often mix the two.
