The Gottman Method is one of the most researched approaches to couples therapy in the world — built on more than 40 years of studying what actually keeps relationships strong. At Dr. Samuel’s downtown Vancouver practice, Gottman-informed couples therapy is offered in English and Farsi, in person and online.

What Is the Gottman Method?

Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the method is grounded in decades of research with thousands of couples. The Gottmans were able to predict relationship outcomes with high accuracy by observing how partners handle conflict and connection. The therapy translates those findings into practical, learnable skills — it is structured, goal-oriented, and warm.

Does This Sound Familiar?

You have the same argument over and over without ever resolving it. Conversations slide into criticism, defensiveness, contempt, or shutting down. You feel more like roommates than partners. Parenting, in-laws, or money keep pulling you apart. You still love each other — you just cannot find your way back to closeness. Gottman therapy gives you a map.

The Four Horsemen — and the Antidotes

Gottman research identified four communication patterns that predict relationship breakdown: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. The good news is that each has a specific, teachable antidote — gentle start-up, building a culture of appreciation, taking responsibility, and self-soothing. A large part of the work is learning to spot these patterns in the moment and shift out of them together.

The Sound Relationship House

The Gottman Method builds a relationship like a house, level by level: building love maps (truly knowing each other’s inner world), sharing fondness and admiration, turning toward instead of away, managing conflict, making life dreams come true, and creating shared meaning. We assess where the strain is and rebuild from there.

What to Expect

Gottman therapy usually begins with an assessment — a joint session followed by individual conversations — so we understand your relationship’s strengths and pain points before setting goals together. From there, sessions are practical: you learn and practise skills you can use at home, not just talk about problems. The aim is a shift in how conflicts feel — from gridlock toward real dialogue.

Gottman Therapy for Iranian-Canadian Couples

For bicultural and Iranian-Canadian couples, conflict is often layered with cultural expectation, in-law dynamics, gender roles, and the stress of building a life between two worlds. Dr. Samuel offers Gottman-informed therapy in Farsi and English, with a genuine understanding of these pressures — including آبرو, family loyalty, and intergenerational difference.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Can I start Gottman couples therapy on my own if my partner won’t come?

Yes, and it is more common than you would think. Individual sessions help you understand the dynamic you are both caught in and change your own moves in it, which often makes it easier to invite your partner in later. Many couples begin with just one person willing to try.

Is it too late for us?

Rarely. The Gottman Method is research-based and works even for couples in serious distress, as long as both people are willing to engage. The free first consultation is where Samuel assesses honestly whether it is a good fit — and says so if it is not.

How long does Gottman couples therapy take?

It varies. Therapy begins with an assessment phase — a joint session, a brief individual conversation with each partner, and a look at how you handle conflict — then moves to focused sessions on your specific goals. Some couples see meaningful change in a few months; couples arriving after years of gridlock or after an affair usually continue longer. The pace is set together and reviewed openly.

Do you offer couples sessions in Farsi?

Yes. Samuel offers Gottman-informed couples therapy in both English and Farsi, with an understanding of the cultural dynamics many Iranian-Canadian couples navigate — in-laws, family expectations, and one partner settling into Canada faster than the other.

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. Your first 20-minute phone consultation is free, confidential, and no-pressure — a chance to say what is happening and hear whether this approach is right for you. Call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604, or text a line and Samuel will call you back.

What is the Gottman Method, in plain terms?

It is a structured approach to couples therapy built on four decades of research into what actually predicts whether relationships last. Rather than general talking, it assesses your relationship against known predictors — how you argue, how you repair, how much genuine friendship is left — and then teaches specific, practised skills for the parts that are failing. Samuel uses it as the backbone of couples work in Vancouver, in English and Farsi.

Is the Gottman Method evidence-based?

Yes. It rests on longitudinal studies of thousands of couples that identified the behaviours predicting separation with high accuracy, and on clinical trials of the interventions that reverse them. It is one of the most researched couples approaches available. Samuel is candid that no method rescues a relationship where one partner has already left emotionally — but for couples still willing to engage, the evidence is strong.

What are the ‘Four Horsemen’ and why do they matter?

Criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling — the four patterns Gottman research found most predictive of separation. Contempt is the strongest predictor of all. Most couples show at least one; the therapy is not about never doing them again but about recognising them early and using the antidotes: gentle start-up, building a culture of appreciation, taking responsibility, and self-soothing instead of shutting down.

Are Gottman couples sessions billed like regular counselling?

Yes. Gottman-informed couples therapy is delivered by Samuel as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, so it is covered by most extended health plans in BC in the same way as any RCC session. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Samuel confirms your specific coverage on the free call.

Where do Gottman couples sessions take place?

In person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, or by secure video anywhere in British Columbia. Evening and weekend appointments are available. Couples from North Vancouver, Burnaby and West Vancouver often mix the two.

More questions about Gottman couples therapy in Vancouver

What is ‘stonewalling’ and why does one of us shut down during arguments?
Stonewalling is when a partner goes silent, looks away or leaves mid-argument. It almost always follows ‘flooding’ — the body’s stress response taking over so that listening becomes physically impossible. It is not indifference; it is overwhelm. Gottman work teaches couples to notice flooding early, take a structured break, and come back — which changes the whole shape of the fight.
What is a repair attempt?
Any small move — a joke, a touch, ‘let me try that again’ — that stops an argument escalating. Gottman research found that whether a couple’s repair attempts land matters more than how often they argue. Much of the therapy is about making your repairs recognisable to each other and accepting them when they come.
What are ‘bids for connection’?
The small, everyday reaches for attention — a comment about the news, a sigh, a hand on the shoulder. Couples who last turn toward these bids most of the time; couples in trouble turn away or against them. It sounds trivial and it is not: it is the daily deposit that makes the hard conversations survivable.
Is it true that most relationship problems never get solved?
Yes — Gottman research found that roughly two thirds of the problems couples argue about are perpetual, rooted in personality or values, and will not be ‘solved’. The goal with those is dialogue instead of gridlock: understanding the dream or fear behind each position so you can live with the difference. The remaining solvable problems get actual problem-solving.
What is the ‘Sound Relationship House’?
It is the Gottman map of what a healthy relationship is built from: knowing each other’s inner worlds, fondness and admiration, turning toward each other, a positive perspective, managing conflict, supporting each other’s life dreams, and shared meaning — held up by trust and commitment. In therapy it works as a diagnostic: it shows which floors are solid and which need work.
What is the ‘5-to-1 ratio’?
In stable couples, positive interactions outnumber negative ones by about five to one during conflict — and far more outside it. Below that, the relationship starts to feel like more work than reward. Samuel uses it as a practical target rather than a rule: it tells couples where to spend effort first.
How is the Gottman Method different from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?
Gottman starts from behaviour and skills — how you argue and repair — and works inward; EFT starts from attachment emotion and works outward. Both are well supported. Samuel uses the Gottman structure as the frame and brings in emotion-focused and IFS work where a partner’s reactivity is too strong for skills alone. Read how the pieces fit on the couples and family therapy page.
Can the Gottman Method help after an affair?
Yes. The Gottman trust-recovery framework moves through atonement, attunement and attachment — full disclosure and genuine remorse first, then rebuilding the emotional connection, then a new commitment. It is slow and structured, which is exactly what betrayed partners need. Samuel wrote about the sequence in Rebuilding Trust After an Affair.
Is Gottman therapy useful for premarital couples?
Very. The same assessment that identifies trouble in long-married couples shows engaged couples where their differences will bite — money, in-laws, children, sex, conflict style — before those become the fights of year three. See Premarital Counselling in Vancouver.
Does the Gottman Method work for high-conflict couples?
Yes, and it was designed with them in mind. High-conflict couples usually need the flooding and stonewalling work first — physiological calm before any skill can be used — and Samuel paces sessions accordingly. Where conflict includes intimidation or control, he will say plainly if joint sessions are not safe.
What if we don’t fight — we just feel distant?
That is often more serious than loud conflict, and Gottman work is well suited to it. Emotional distance shows up as fewer bids for connection, thinner ‘love maps’ of each other’s inner life, and a slide toward parallel lives. The therapy rebuilds friendship deliberately rather than waiting for it to return.
Is there homework between Gottman sessions?
Yes — short, specific practices such as a daily stress-reducing conversation, a structured way to raise a complaint, or a ritual of connection. They take minutes, not hours, and they are where most of the change happens. Samuel keeps them realistic for two working adults.
Does the Gottman Method work for Iranian-Canadian and intercultural couples?
Yes. Its predictors of relationship health hold across cultures; what changes is the content of the perpetual problems — in-laws, obligation to extended family, how much to tell relatives, and raising children between two cultures. Samuel runs the work in Farsi or English and treats culture as a real variable, not an excuse. See this post on the acculturation gap.
Can Gottman couples therapy be done online?
Yes. Assessment and skills work translate well to secure video, and many Vancouver couples do most sessions from home. Samuel suggests the first session in person where possible, and in-person for very high-conflict couples.
What if one of us wants out?
Then the first job is honesty, not repair. Samuel offers a short discernment phase in which both partners can be candid about where they stand; couples who then choose to work start with far more commitment than couples who were pushed. If the answer is separation, the same skills make it a better separation.
Who runs the Gottman couples sessions?
Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC, runs every session himself and uses the Gottman Method, together with Internal Family Systems, as the core of his couples practice in Vancouver. His 25 years of trauma-informed clinical work — including refugee-camp work with the International Red Crescent — shape how he paces the method for couples whose reactivity has a history.
How do we prepare for the first Gottman session?
You do not need to. Come as you are — angry, hopeful, sceptical. Samuel will hear each of your accounts, watch how you talk about a recent disagreement, and give you a first, neutral map of the pattern. Anything you would rather say alone can wait for the brief individual conversations that follow.
Will Samuel take sides?
No. The Gottman approach is explicitly balanced: both partners’ perspectives are treated as valid data about the relationship, and the target is the pattern between you, not either person. If one partner’s behaviour is unsafe, that is named clearly — but ordinary blame is not adjudicated.
Can we use Gottman therapy just for one specific problem, like parenting or money?
Yes. Many couples come with one gridlocked issue. Samuel works that issue through the Gottman dialogue process — uncovering the dreams and fears behind each position — and most couples find the skills carry over to the next argument on their own.
How do we book a Gottman couples session in Vancouver?
Start with the free 20-minute call: call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604, text a single line, or request a callback at drsamuel.ca/book-a-call/. Samuel answers himself — no receptionist, no forms — and books a first session in person downtown or by video if it feels right for you both.
We’ve been living together for years — is premarital counselling still worth it?
Yes. Research on cohabitation and commitment shows that couples who “slide” into living together without deliberately deciding on the relationship’s direction can carry unexamined assumptions into marriage. Premarital counselling with Samuel surfaces those assumptions — about money, children, in-laws and conflict style — so both partners enter the marriage having actively chosen it. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Can premarital counselling help if our families disagree about the wedding?
Absolutely. When extended families clash over the wedding — guest list, ceremony style, cultural expectations, or finances — the couple absorbs the stress and underlying relationship patterns surface early. Samuel uses a Gottman and IFS framework to help couples separate the family pressure from the decisions that are genuinely theirs, and to approach those decisions as a united team rather than as referees between two families. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. See: Premarital Counselling in Vancouver
Are cold feet before the wedding a sign we shouldn’t get married?
Research by Lavner, Bradbury and Karney (2012) found that pre-wedding doubt — especially in women — was one of the strongest early predictors of marital dissatisfaction and divorce within the first four years. That does not mean every doubt is a deal-breaker; it means the doubt deserves attention rather than dismissal. Samuel uses a Gottman and IFS framework to help couples sort normal jitters from genuine incompatibility before the wedding, not after. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Does premarital counselling actually reduce the chance of divorce?
Yes. A meta-analysis by Fawcett, Hawkins and colleagues (2010) found that couples who complete a structured premarital programme report significantly stronger communication and relationship quality, and Carroll and Doherty (2003) found the divorce rate dropped by roughly 30 percent. The Gottman assessment is especially useful here because it flags the specific patterns — the Four Horsemen, unresolved perpetual problems, thin friendship maps — that predict trouble before they have time to harden. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. We are engaged, and one of us wants children while the other is not sure. Can premarital counselling help?
Yes. Samuel uses the Gottman “Dreams Within Conflict” exercise together with Internal Family Systems so that each partner can say what having children means to them and what they fear, without being pushed toward an answer. “Not sure” usually stands for something more specific, such as timing, money or one’s own childhood. More detail is in this guide. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available.
Should we postpone the wedding until we agree about having children?
Not automatically. What matters is that each of you knows the other’s honest position before you marry. A few focused sessions are usually enough for that. Some couples find they agree more than they expected, some set a date to revisit the question, and a few conclude they want different lives. Samuel helps couples reach whichever of these is true for them before the wedding. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available.
Is it normal for couples to fight about money before getting married?
Yes. Dew et al. (2012) found that financial disagreements were the strongest type of disagreement predicting divorce. Money fights before marriage often reflect deeper differences in values and risk tolerance — what Klontz et al. (2011) call “money scripts,” the unconscious beliefs about money each partner carries from childhood. In Gottman terms, financial conflict is usually a perpetual problem rooted in each partner’s dreams and life history rather than a solvable one. Premarital counselling helps couples move from gridlock to dialogue about money before those patterns harden. Read more: Money Fights Before Marriage — Premarital Counselling Vancouver. Fees and expenses are covered by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available.
How can premarital counselling help us stop arguing about finances?
Premarital counselling does not aim to make you agree about every dollar; it aims to turn money from a power struggle into a shared project. Gottman and Silver (2015) describe most financial disagreements as perpetual problems that call for dialogue rather than a final answer. Samuel uses the Gottman “Dreams Within Conflict” exercise together with IFS so each partner can name the fears and hopes their spending or saving carries, then helps the couple build practical agreements they both actually keep.
