Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based, non-pathologizing approach that helps you understand the different “parts” of yourself — the inner critic, the protector, the anxious part, the part that shuts down in conflict — and lead them from a place of calm, grounded Self. At Dr. Samuel’s downtown Vancouver practice, IFS is offered for individuals and couples, in English and Farsi.

What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS understands the mind as a system of sub-personalities, or “parts,” each carrying its own feelings, beliefs, and protective strategies. Rather than fighting these parts, IFS helps you build a trusting relationship with them. Research supports IFS for depression, trauma symptoms, and anxiety, and it was added to the U.S. National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.

Parts and the Self

Protectors work hard to keep you safe — the perfectionist, the people-pleaser, the part that gets angry or goes numb. Exiles hold the younger, more vulnerable pain that protectors are trying to guard. Self is the calm, curious, compassionate core that is never damaged — and from which real healing happens. The goal of IFS is not to get rid of parts, but to help them relax and trust your Self to lead.

What IFS Helps With

Trauma and PTSD — IFS gently unburdens the parts that carry traumatic memories, without forcing you to relive them. Anxiety and the inner critic — Understand the protective intention behind self-criticism and chronic worry. Emotional reactivity — Recognize which part takes over in stressful moments so you can respond instead of react. Shame and low self-worth — Reach and heal the exiled parts that carry “I’m not enough.”

IFS for Couples and Families

Most painful arguments are not really between two people — they are between their protective parts. When your protector collides with your partner’s protector, the same fight repeats. IFS-informed couples work helps each partner notice which part is speaking, soften it, and speak from Self instead. Conversations slow down, defensiveness drops, and you can finally hear each other. This pairs naturally with Gottman Method couples therapy for couples who want both structure and depth.

IFS for the Iranian-Canadian Community

Many Iranian-Canadians carry parts shaped by migration, intergenerational expectation, and آبرو (face/honour) — a part that performs strength, a part that fears judgment, a part loyal to family duty. IFS offers a respectful, non-shaming way to honour these parts while freeing you from being run by them. Dr. Samuel works in both Farsi and English and understands this cultural context first-hand.

Who you’re talking to

I’m Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC. Over 25 years I’ve worked with trauma, anxiety, and relationships — from Red Crescent refugee camps and veterans’ clinics to community mental health here in Vancouver. I won’t be shocked by what you bring me, and I won’t rush you.

As an Iranian-Canadian clinician working in both English and Farsi, I understand the weight of آبرو, the pull between cultures, and how hard it can be to say “I need help” out loud. We go at your pace, find what’s really driving things, and work through it together.

Frequently Asked Questions — Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

Is IFS the same as having multiple personalities?

No. IFS is not about a disorder or a split identity. ‘Parts’ simply describes the normal, everyday inner voices everyone has — the part that pushes you to achieve, the part that wants rest, the part that snaps at your partner and the part that regrets it. IFS helps these parts work together instead of against each other.

What actually happens in an IFS session?

You and Samuel gently explore the different parts of you — what each is trying to protect and what it needs. It is a calm, curious process, not reliving trauma, and you stay in control the whole time. Most people are surprised how quickly a harsh inner critic softens once it is asked what it is afraid would happen if it stopped.

Is IFS evidence-based?

Yes. Internal Family Systems is a recognised, research-supported model used for trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties, and it is listed as an evidence-based practice in clinical registries. Studies of IFS for PTSD and for depression show meaningful symptom reduction; Samuel is candid that the evidence base is younger than CBT’s and still growing.

Can IFS help with couple or family issues?

Yes — it is one of the two approaches Samuel builds couples work on, alongside the Gottman Method. IFS helps each partner recognise the part of them that reacts (the critic, the one who shuts down, the one who keeps score) so that the skills learned in couples sessions actually get used under stress. Read how they combine on the couples and family therapy page.

Do you offer IFS sessions in Farsi?

Yes. Samuel offers IFS therapy in both English and Farsi, with sensitivity to the cultural context many Iranian-Canadian clients bring — including the parts shaped by family duty, honour, migration and the pressure to hold everything together. جلسات به فارسی برگزار می‌شود.

What is Internal Family Systems therapy, in one paragraph?

IFS is a model of the mind in which we all have parts — sub-personalities with their own feelings and jobs — and an undamaged core Self that can lead them. Some parts protect us (the manager who plans everything, the firefighter who reaches for a drink or a screen), some carry old pain (the exiles). Therapy helps the protective parts relax so the Self can heal the wounded ones. Samuel uses it for trauma, anxiety, self-criticism and couples work in Vancouver.

Who is IFS a good fit for?

People who know exactly what they should do and cannot make themselves do it; people at war with themselves — perfectionists, harsh self-critics, those who feel ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’; adults with trauma who found exposure-style approaches overwhelming; and couples whose fights are driven by reactions that seem bigger than the moment. It suits people who like understanding why, not just what.

Is IFS covered by extended health in BC?

Yes. IFS sessions with Samuel are Registered Clinical Counsellor sessions and are covered by most extended health plans. Fees and expenses are covered by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Coverage is confirmed with you on the free call.

Is IFS safe for trauma? Will I have to relive what happened?

IFS is one of the gentler trauma approaches precisely because it does not require reliving. The work goes at the pace of your protective parts: nothing is approached until the parts guarding it agree, and you can stop at any point. Samuel often pairs IFS with EMDR when a specific memory needs processing, and lets the client’s system decide the order.

How do I start IFS therapy in Vancouver?

With a free 20-minute phone call — call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604, or text a line and Samuel will call you back within a day. He answers himself; there is no receptionist and no intake form. Sessions are in person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street or by secure video anywhere in BC, in English or Farsi.

More questions about IFS therapy in Vancouver

What is the ‘Self’ in IFS?
The Self is the calm, curious, compassionate centre that IFS assumes everyone has underneath their parts — not a part itself, and not damaged by what happened to you. When the Self is leading, people report feeling clear and steady even in hard conversations. Much of the therapy is simply helping parts step back so that state becomes reachable on demand.
What are ‘managers’, ‘firefighters’ and ‘exiles’?
Managers are the proactive protectors — planning, controlling, criticising you first so no one else can. Firefighters react when pain breaks through — bingeing, drinking, rage, numbing, scrolling. Exiles are the young, hurt parts both groups are protecting. Naming which is active in a given moment is often the first relief clients feel.
Why does IFS talk about ‘no bad parts’?
Because every part, even the one that drinks or rages or sabotages, is trying to protect you from something. Treating a part as the enemy makes it dig in; understanding what it fears lets it change jobs. This is not the same as excusing behaviour — it is the fastest route to actually changing it.
Can IFS help with anxiety?
Yes. Anxiety in IFS is usually a manager part working overtime to keep something worse from happening. Instead of arguing with the worry, the work is to find out what it is guarding and give it a better job. Clients often describe the anxiety becoming smaller and less personal within a few sessions.
Can IFS help with depression and self-criticism?
It is one of its strongest uses. The inner critic — ‘you’re lazy, you’re behind, you’re too much’ — is treated as a part with a protective purpose, often formed early. When it is heard rather than fought, it typically softens, and the exiled sadness underneath can finally be met. Samuel combines this with practical work on sleep, routine and, where useful, neurofeedback training.
Does IFS work for ADHD or the shame that comes with it?
Yes, for the shame part especially. Adults with ADHD carry decades of ‘why can’t you just…’, and that critic sabotages every new system they try. IFS unburdens the critic while coping systems and neurofeedback training work on attention itself. Samuel described the combination in Adult ADHD Treatment Without Medication.
Can IFS help after a narcissistic or emotionally abusive relationship?
Yes. Those relationships leave a part that still second-guesses your perceptions and a part that blames you for staying. IFS lets both be heard without being obeyed, so clarity and self-trust return. See Healing from a narcissistic relationship.
How is IFS different from CBT?
CBT changes thoughts and behaviours directly; IFS changes your relationship to the parts producing them. CBT is faster for a specific, well-defined problem; IFS goes deeper when the same patterns keep coming back despite knowing better. Samuel uses both and will tell you on the free call which is the better starting point for you.
How is IFS different from EMDR?
EMDR processes specific traumatic memories; IFS works with the whole inner system, including the parts that block or fear the processing. They combine well: IFS to get the system’s permission and calm the protectors, EMDR to clear the memory. Samuel offers both in the same practice. See EMDR therapy in Vancouver.
How long does IFS therapy take?
Some people feel a shift in the first few sessions; deeper unburdening of old wounds usually takes months of steady work. Samuel reviews progress with you openly and does not keep people coming without a reason. Sessions are usually weekly at the start.
Is IFS a spiritual or religious approach?
No. IFS is a psychological model, and the word ‘Self’ describes a psychological state, not a belief. That said, many clients with a religious background — including Muslim and Christian clients — find it sits comfortably alongside faith, because it never asks them to give up their values.
Can IFS be done online?
Yes, very well. IFS is a spoken, inward-focused process that translates cleanly to secure video, and many of Samuel’s IFS clients across British Columbia meet him from home. In-person sessions are available at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver.
Will I be asked to talk to my parts out loud?
Sometimes, gently, and only if it helps. Much of the work happens quietly, with Samuel asking questions and you noticing what comes up inside. Nothing is theatrical, and nothing is required.
What if I don’t feel anything or can’t find any ‘parts’?
That is itself a part — a protector that keeps feeling at a distance, usually for good historical reasons. It is common in people who have had to stay functional through hard years, and it is where the work starts, without pressure.
Can teenagers or young adults do IFS?
Yes. Older teens and young adults often take to it quickly, because talking about ‘the part of me that…’ is less exposing than talking about ‘me’. Samuel sees young adults individually and, where useful, as part of family sessions.
Is IFS useful for Iranian-Canadian and immigrant clients specifically?
Often very. Migration creates parts that had to be strong, parts loyal to family expectations, and parts that feel guilty for wanting a different life. IFS gives them all a voice without forcing a choice between cultures. Samuel runs IFS in Farsi and English and wrote about the wider pattern in this post.
Can IFS be combined with medication?
Yes. IFS works alongside antidepressants, anxiety medication or ADHD medication; nothing about the model requires being off medication. Samuel’s doctorate-level understanding of how medications and physiology interact means those questions can be discussed knowledgeably in session, in coordination with your family doctor or psychiatrist.
What does a first IFS session look like?
Mostly listening and mapping. Samuel hears what brought you, and together you notice the two or three parts most active around it — the one that criticises, the one that avoids, the one that keeps going. By the end you have a first sketch of your inner system and a sense of whether the approach fits. There is no homework unless you want some.
How do I know if IFS is right for me rather than another approach?
Ask on the free 20-minute call. Samuel will listen to what you have tried and what keeps recurring, and tell you honestly whether IFS, CBT, EMDR, couples work or neurofeedback training is the better first step — or some combination. If it is not IFS, he will say so.
Where can I read more about IFS and Samuel’s other approaches?
Start with the couples and family therapy page for how IFS pairs with the Gottman Method, the individual therapy page for trauma and anxiety work, and the blog for recent articles. Then call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604 for the free 20-minute conversation.
