Counselling That Understands Muslim Marriage

Most couples therapy is built on assumptions that do not fit Muslim families — about individualism, about extended family, about what marriage is for. Dr. Samuel works differently. As a Muslim clinician with a doctorate in health sciences and 25+ years of experience, he brings the rigour of Western couples science — the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy and IFS — together with genuine respect for the Islamic vision of marriage, family and mutual mercy between spouses. In Islam, marriage is described as half of one’s deen — protecting it is among the most worthy efforts a couple can make.

That means no one will ask you to abandon your values to save your marriage. In-laws, family honour, gender roles, privacy — these are understood here as real forces in your relationship, not obstacles to be dismissed. Couples work is conducted respectfully, and individual boundaries and modesty are honoured throughout.

Our Commitments to You

Faith at the centre

The goal is a marriage that is healthy and true to your deen — never one at the expense of the other.

Privacy from your community

Your therapist is in Canada — entirely outside your family circles and community. Nothing is shared with anyone, ever.

Both voices heard

Sessions are structured so neither spouse is blamed, cornered or outnumbered. Respect for both of you is non-negotiable.

Your schedule honoured

Appointments arranged around Gulf evenings and weekends, prayer times, and Ramadan.

How It Works

1Send a WhatsApp message

One spouse can reach out first. Write in English or Farsi — every message is answered personally and discreetly.

2Free 15-minute consultation

A short, no-obligation call to understand your situation and how sessions would work for you both.

3Begin online sessions

Secure video sessions together, individually, or both — at times that suit Gulf evenings and weekends.

Common Questions

My spouse is hesitant. Can I start alone?
Yes. Many couples begin with one partner. Individual work on the relationship is valuable in itself, and hesitant spouses often join once they see the process is respectful.

Is this confidential?
Completely. Nothing is shared with family, community or employers. Sessions are held over secure video, and Dr. Samuel practises from Canada — entirely outside your community — which many Gulf clients consider an added layer of privacy.

Will our faith be respected?
Yes — it is the starting point. The goal is a marriage that is healthy and true to your deen, never one at the expense of the other.

What about the time difference?
Dr. Samuel practises from Canada and reserves times that fall in the evening and weekend hours for the Gulf states.

What are the fees?
Fees are quoted in Canadian dollars and confirmed during your free consultation, before any commitment.

Who you’re talking to

I’m Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC. Over 25 years I’ve worked with trauma, anxiety, and relationships — from Red Crescent refugee camps and veterans’ clinics to community mental health here in Vancouver. I won’t be shocked by what you bring me, and I won’t rush you.

As an Iranian-Canadian clinician working in both English and Farsi, I understand the weight of آبرو, the pull between cultures, and how hard it can be to say “I need help” out loud. We go at your pace, find what’s really driving things, and work through it together.

More questions about Muslim couples and family counselling

What method do you use for Muslim couples counselling?
The Gottman Method for structure — the four patterns that predict separation and their antidotes, repair, friendship, shared meaning — combined with Internal Family Systems (IFS) for the reactive parts of each spouse. Both fit naturally with a marriage understood as a covenant: they work on repair and mutual responsibility, not on assigning blame. See the Gottman Method page.
Will you push us toward divorce or toward staying?
Neither. That decision belongs to the two of you. Samuel’s job is to make the pattern between you visible and to help you change it; where a marriage cannot safely continue he says so honestly, and where it can he helps you rebuild it.
Can you help with in-law and extended-family conflict?
Yes — it is one of the most common issues Muslim couples bring. The work is usually with the couple first: agreeing what the marriage’s boundaries with each family are, and how to present them respectfully as a united front. Extended family join only when it helps.
Can counselling help after a betrayal of trust?
Yes. Trust is rebuilt in a specific order — disclosure, genuine remorse, then a rebuilt relationship — and Samuel uses the Gottman trust-recovery framework for the structure. It is slower than couples expect and more possible than they fear. See Rebuilding Trust After an Affair.
Do you offer premarital counselling for Muslim couples?
Yes. Premarital sessions cover the areas that research says matter most — money, families of origin, in-laws, children, and how you each handle conflict — before they become the arguments of year three. See Premarital Counselling in Vancouver.
Can we do sessions with a family member present, or separately as well as together?
Yes. Joint sessions are the core; brief individual conversations with each spouse are usual early on; and family members can join specific sessions where everyone agrees it helps. Nothing said individually is used against either spouse.
What if one of us wants to speak in Farsi and the other in English?
That is common in mixed and second-generation couples and works fine. Samuel runs bilingual sessions and makes sure the spouse with less English is never at a disadvantage in the room. جلسات به فارسی برگزار می‌شود.
Where do sessions take place?
In person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, or by secure video anywhere in British Columbia and for couples in the Gulf states, with evening and weekend times reserved for the time difference.
Is Muslim couples counselling covered by insurance in Canada?
Registered Clinical Counsellor sessions are covered by most Canadian extended health plans and can be direct-billed under the plan of the spouse who is the client of record. Couples outside Canada pay privately; details are given on the free call, never afterwards.
How is Samuel different from other couples counsellors?
Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC, brings the Gottman Method and IFS, 25 years of clinical work that began in refugee camps with the International Red Crescent, fluency in English and Farsi, and a practice built around faith being respected rather than worked around. Couples and family work is the largest part of his practice. See couples and family therapy.
How do we start?
With a free 20-minute phone or video conversation directly with Samuel — no receptionist, no forms. Call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604, or send a single line and he will reply within a day. One spouse can make the call for both.
