A Muslim Clinician and Scholar — Trained in the West, Rooted in Faith

Dr. Samuel EzzatiLord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC holds a doctorate in health sciences and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Canadian Certified Counsellor practising from Vancouver, Canada. His 25+ years of clinical work include twelve years with the Red Crescent, serving in refugee camps and veterans’ clinics across three countries — work carried out within Muslim communities, in the language of faith, family and honour.

As a Muslim himself, Dr. Samuel understands the questions many believers bring to therapy: Will a therapist respect my deen? Will I have to explain — or defend — my values? Is seeking help a weakness of faith? In his practice the answer is simple: your faith is a foundation to build on, never an obstacle to work around. Therapy here complements your relationship with Allah — it does not compete with it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that Allah has not sent down an illness without also sending down its cure — seeking help is an act of faith, not a departure from it.

Clinically, sessions draw on evidence-based Western approaches — CBT, IFS (Internal Family Systems), schema therapy and trauma-informed care — delivered in a way that is faith-informed and culturally fluent. You will never be asked to compromise your beliefs, your modesty or your boundaries.

What We Can Work On Together

  • Anxiety and constant worry
  • Low mood and loss of motivation
  • Stress and burnout at work
  • Trauma and painful past experiences
  • Waswasa and intrusive thoughts (OCD)
  • Feeling distant in your faith
  • Grief and loss
  • Self-esteem and perfectionism
  • Identity, belonging and life abroad
  • Family pressure and expectations
  • Major life transitions

Many clients in the Gulf are professionals and expatriates carrying heavy responsibilities quietly. Therapy offers a private, respectful space to set the weight down — with someone who understands both the clinical picture and the cultural one.

Common Questions

Is everything confidential?
Yes. Sessions are private, held over secure video, and nothing is shared with family, employers or anyone else. Dr. Samuel practises from Canada — entirely outside your community — which many clients in the Gulf consider an added layer of privacy.

Is therapy compatible with my faith?
Yes. Seeking help is an act of self-care and responsibility, not a lack of tawakkul. Our work supports your faith and never asks you to set it aside.

What about the time difference?
Dr. Samuel practises from Canada and reserves appointment times that fall in the evening and weekend hours for the Gulf states.

What language are sessions in?
English or Farsi — whichever you are most comfortable in.

Will my boundaries and modesty be respected?
Always. Professional, respectful boundaries are foundational to this work — you will never need to explain or justify them.

What are the fees?
Fees are quoted in Canadian dollars and confirmed during your free consultation, before any commitment.

Who you’re talking to

I’m Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC. Over 25 years I’ve worked with trauma, anxiety, and relationships — from Red Crescent refugee camps and veterans’ clinics to community mental health here in Vancouver. I won’t be shocked by what you bring me, and I won’t rush you.

As an Iranian-Canadian clinician working in both English and Farsi, I understand the weight of آبرو, the pull between cultures, and how hard it can be to say “I need help” out loud. We go at your pace, find what’s really driving things, and work through it together.

More questions about counselling for Muslim clients

Do I have to be religious to work with a Muslim counsellor?
No. Samuel Ezzatilord, PhD, RCC, CCC, LMCC, works with practising Muslims, cultural Muslims, and people of no faith. What the page promises is that faith will be respected and understood as part of your life, not that it will be assumed or required.
What approaches does Samuel use, and are they compatible with Islamic values?
Cognitive-behavioural therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR for trauma, Gottman-based couples work, and neurofeedback training alongside counselling. None of them asks you to set aside your beliefs; several sit naturally alongside them — patience, self-examination, repair of relationships. Samuel says openly when a technique needs adapting for you.
Can counselling help with anxiety or low mood when I feel I should be relying on faith?
Yes. Seeking help is responsibility, not a lack of tawakkul — the same as seeing a doctor for a physical illness. Anxiety and depression are treated with the same evidence-based methods used for anyone, framed in a way that supports rather than competes with your faith.
Do you work with trauma in Muslim clients — war, migration, family events?
Yes. Samuel’s 25 years of trauma-informed practice began with refugee-camp work with the International Red Crescent. EMDR, IFS and trauma-informed counselling are all available, and nothing requires you to retell events in detail.
Can you help with family pressure — marriage expectations, parents, in-laws?
Yes. Family obligation and honour are treated as real and legitimate, not as problems to be discarded, and the work is finding a way to meet your own needs without breaking what matters. Family sessions can be arranged where everyone is willing.
Is counselling available for Muslim clients in Vancouver in person, or only online?
Both. Clients in Metro Vancouver can see Samuel in person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street; clients elsewhere in British Columbia and in the Gulf states meet him by secure video, with evening and weekend times reserved for the time difference.
What languages are sessions available in?
English and Farsi. Sessions can move between the two. جلسات به فارسی برگزار می‌شود.
Is what I say confidential from my family and community?
Completely. Nothing leaves the practice without your written consent, and Samuel practises from Canada, outside your community — which many clients consider an added layer of privacy. Video from home means no one sees you enter an office.
Can I combine counselling with medication or with a doctor’s care?
Yes. Counselling, EMDR and neurofeedback training work alongside medication, and Samuel’s doctorate-level understanding of medication and sleep means those questions can be discussed knowledgeably, in coordination with your doctor.
How is coverage handled for Muslim clients in Canada?
Registered Clinical Counsellor sessions are covered by most Canadian extended health plans and can be direct-billed; ICBC, CVAP, FNHA and IFHP apply where relevant. Clients outside Canada pay privately; details are given on the free call, never a surprise afterwards.
How do I start?
With a free 20-minute phone or video conversation directly with Samuel — no receptionist, no forms. Call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604, or send a single line and he will reply within a day. If he is not the right fit, he will say so and point you somewhere better.
