What a crash does that the repair bill does not show

Driving anxiety and avoidance

Bracing at intersections, taking longer routes, refusing the highway, or not driving at all. Often the first thing to appear and the last to be mentioned.

PTSD and intrusive memories

Flashbacks, nightmares, the sound of the impact arriving unannounced. Treated with EMDR, which is well established for accident-related trauma.

Sleep, mood and concentration

Broken sleep, irritability, low mood, and the fog that follows a concussion — compounded by pain and a recovery that is taking longer than anyone promised.

How it works

1

Get your claim number

File your claim with ICBC. You will receive a claim number — that plus your Personal Health Number is all that is needed.

2

Call for twenty minutes

Free, no obligation, and you reach me directly. We check what your coverage may include and whether I am the right fit.

3

Start — I bill ICBC

Sessions are billed directly to ICBC within their set rate. No invoices, no reimbursement forms, no balance owing.

Questions people actually ask about ICBC counselling

Does ICBC pay for counselling after a car accident?
Yes. Under Enhanced Care, ICBC pre-approves counselling as part of early treatment after a crash. You do not need to prove fault, and you do not need a diagnosis before you start. See ICBC’s treatment and recovery benefits at icbc.com.
How many counselling sessions does ICBC cover?
Up to 12 pre-approved sessions. If you still need support after that, your counsellor can request an extension from your ICBC recovery team, usually supported by a report and often a recommendation from your doctor.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No — not for the pre-approved sessions in the first 12 weeks. Before April 2019 a referral was required; under the current rules you can book directly. After the initial period, an extension request generally does need medical support.
What do I need to book?
Your ICBC claim number, and your Personal Health Number. That is genuinely it. If your claim number has not come through yet, call anyway and we will start the paperwork.
How much does it cost me?
Nothing, when the sessions are billed within ICBC’s set rate. ICBC pays a maximum amount per session directly to the provider. I bill ICBC directly and work within that rate, so there is no balance for you to pay and no receipts to chase.
What is the 12-week rule?
The pre-approval applies to counselling started within 12 weeks — 84 days — of the crash. The point is to begin inside that window. Starting early also matters clinically: trauma responses are easier to treat before they consolidate.
What if more than 12 weeks have already passed?
You can still get counselling. It moves from automatic pre-approval to an approval request through your adjuster, usually with a recommendation from your doctor. Say so on the first call and we will work out the route.
What does ICBC counselling actually treat?
Driving anxiety and avoidance, panic, intrusive memories and flashbacks, nightmares and broken sleep, irritability and anger, low mood, concentration problems, post-concussion symptoms, and the frustration of a slow recovery.
I was not badly hurt physically. Do I still qualify?
Yes. Psychological injury is not proportional to vehicle damage. Minor collisions produce serious anxiety and PTSD often enough that it is unremarkable clinically.
Can I do the sessions online?
Yes. Video sessions are available across British Columbia, which matters when driving is exactly the thing that has become difficult.
Was the accident my fault? Does that matter?
Yes — sorry, no. Enhanced Care treatment benefits are not fault-based. Coverage does not depend on who caused the crash.
I was a passenger, cyclist or pedestrian.
Coverage is not limited to drivers. Passengers, cyclists and pedestrians injured in a crash in British Columbia can access the same treatment benefits.
Can I see a counsellor and a physiotherapist at the same time?
Yes. Counselling sits alongside physiotherapy, massage, kinesiology and chiropractic care within your treatment benefits. They are separate allocations.
Will ICBC see my session notes?
No. ICBC receives what it needs to administer the claim — that treatment occurred, and clinical reporting where required. The content of what you say in session is not handed over. I explain the exact limits in plain language in the first session.
Does counselling affect my settlement or claim?
Attending counselling is a treatment benefit, not an admission of anything. If you have questions about your claim itself, that is a matter for your adjuster or a lawyer — I do not give claims advice.
Are sessions available in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions run fully in Farsi, fully in English, or move between the two. جلسات به فارسی نیز برگزار می‌شود.
What happens in the first session?
We look at what changed after the crash — sleep, driving, mood, concentration, pain — and agree what to work on. Trauma treatment usually means EMDR, which is well established for accident-related PTSD.
How soon can I be seen?
Usually within days. The first conversation is twenty minutes by phone, free, and you reach me directly — no receptionist and no intake forms before we have spoken.
My English is limited and the process is confusing.
That is common and it is not a barrier. Bring your claim number to the first call and we will go through what your coverage may include, in Farsi or English.
What if I have already used my 12 sessions elsewhere?
Then we look at an extension request, or at your extended health coverage, which often covers counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor independently of ICBC.

More questions about ICBC counselling

Does ICBC cover EMDR?
Yes. EMDR is delivered within a counselling session, and ICBC treatment benefits cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor — the method used inside the session is a clinical decision, not a billing category. EMDR is usually the core of what I do for post-crash anxiety and intrusive memories. See EMDR therapy in Vancouver.
Can I get counselling if my crash was outside BC, or in a rental or rideshare?
If your claim is with ICBC, yes — the treatment benefits follow the claim, not the vehicle. If the claim is with another insurer, bring the details to the free call and I will tell you what applies; extended health often covers counselling independently.
What if my symptoms started weeks after the crash?
That is common. Anxiety, sleep disruption and irritability often surface once the physical injuries settle and normal life resumes. Delayed onset does not disqualify you; what matters is that the difficulties are connected to the crash, which we document in the first session.
Can ICBC counselling help with concussion symptoms — fog, irritability, poor concentration?
Yes, alongside your medical care. Post-concussion irritability, sleep problems and attention difficulties respond to counselling and, where useful, neurofeedback training, which I offer in the same practice. I coordinate with your doctor and never replace medical follow-up. See Neurofeedback therapy in Vancouver.
Will you write reports for ICBC or my lawyer?
I provide the clinical reporting ICBC requires to administer treatment. Anything beyond that — reports for a lawyer or a legal process — is discussed with you first, and you decide. The content of your sessions stays confidential.
Can my partner or family come to a session?
Yes, where it helps. A crash affects the household — the partner who now does all the driving, the children who saw you frightened — and I include family members in a session when you want that. Couples and family work is the largest part of my practice. See couples and family therapy.
What is the difference between ICBC counselling and CVAP counselling?
ICBC covers injury from a motor-vehicle crash; the Crime Victim Assistance Program covers injury from a crime — an assault, a hit-and-run treated as a criminal matter, threats. Some situations qualify for both. I am a provider for both programs and can help you work out which applies. See CVAP counselling in Vancouver.
How is trauma from a car crash different from other trauma?
It is often more concentrated: one moment, one place, one set of triggers — intersections, headlights, a particular road — which is exactly why EMDR works so well for it. Where the crash landed on top of older trauma, the work is slower and I say so early. See Trauma therapist in Vancouver.
Where are ICBC counselling sessions held?
In person at 1300–1500 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, or by secure video anywhere in British Columbia — video is often the better choice when driving is the thing that has become hard. Evening and weekend times are available.
How do I start?
Call or WhatsApp 604-721-0604 with your claim number, or text a line and I will call you back within a day. The first twenty minutes are free and you reach me directly. If your claim number has not arrived yet, call anyway.
I drive for a living. Will counselling take me off the road?
No. Counselling for professional drivers is built around keeping you earning, not sidelining you. I schedule evening, weekend and secure-video sessions so appointments do not replace paid shifts, and the treatment plan uses a graded return-to-driving ladder that starts with the routes you already tolerate and works up to the one you avoid. If your injuries qualify you for ICBC’s income replacement benefit, a gradual part-time return is allowed while you recover, and I coordinate the clinical and financial timelines with your recovery specialist. See counselling for professional drivers after a crash.
My crash happened while I was working. Do I claim through ICBC or WorkSafeBC?
WorkSafeBC first, then ICBC. ICBC states that WorkSafeBC is the primary insurer for injuries that happen on the job, even when a vehicle caused them, and that ICBC acts as secondary insurer for anything WorkSafeBC does not cover. Employees driving a company vehicle on shift are usually WorkSafeBC claims; ride-hail and delivery drivers who are independent contractors are usually ICBC claims. I provide counselling under both systems and can help you work out which applies during the free 20-minute call.
My concussion was months ago and I’m still not right — brain fog, short temper, can’t sleep. Is it too late for ICBC to cover treatment?
It is not too late. The 12-week pre-approval window is about starting, not about how long ago the crash happened; if the window has closed, counselling is still available through an approval request. Post-concussion symptoms such as brain fog, irritability and poor sleep often persist precisely because the brain injury was never specifically treated. Counselling addresses the emotional and cognitive load — the frustration, the sleep disruption, the short fuse — and neurofeedback training targets the dysregulated brainwave patterns that a concussion leaves behind. I coordinate with your physician and bill ICBC directly. See Post-concussion syndrome — counselling and neurofeedback in Vancouver.
Does ICBC cover counselling for chronic pain that started after a car accident?
Yes. Chronic pain that develops or persists after a motor-vehicle collision is a recognized treatment need under ICBC’s Enhanced Care benefits. Samuel works with the psychological side of chronic pain — the fear-avoidance cycle, sleep disruption, frustration and mood changes that keep the nervous system sensitized — using EMDR and neurofeedback alongside your medical care. Sessions and fees are covered by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC and most extended-health plans, and are billed directly to insurers. Call 604-721-0604 for a free 20-minute consultation. See Chronic pain after car accident — counselling in Vancouver.
I’m too afraid to drive after my accident — does ICBC cover counselling for driving phobia?
Yes. Driving phobia — refusing the highway, bracing at intersections, avoiding the car altogether — is one of the most common and treatable consequences of a crash. It responds well to EMDR, often within a small number of sessions. ICBC pre-approves up to 12 counselling sessions in the first 12 weeks, no referral needed, and Samuel bills ICBC directly so you do not have to submit the claim yourself. Research shows roughly 95 percent of people diagnosed with PTSD after a motor-vehicle accident report significant driving anxiety, and that structured treatment resolves it in the majority of cases (Blanchard & Hickling, 2004). Call 604-721-0604 for a free 20-minute consultation. See EMDR therapy in Vancouver.
I can’t sleep after my car accident — does ICBC cover counselling for insomnia and nightmares?
Yes. Sleep disturbance — insomnia, nightmares, waking in a panic — is one of the most common consequences of a motor-vehicle accident and a core symptom of post-traumatic stress. Research from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs PTSD centre shows that cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) helps roughly seven out of ten trauma survivors sleep normally again. ICBC pre-approves up to 12 counselling sessions in the first 12 weeks after a crash, no referral needed, and Samuel bills ICBC directly so you do not have to submit the claim yourself. See Sleep problems after a car accident — counselling in Vancouver.
I’ve become angry and short-tempered since my car accident — does ICBC cover counselling for anger?
Yes. Anger and irritability after a crash are among the most common — and most overlooked — consequences. A meta-analysis in Clinical Psychology Review found that anger has the strongest association with PTSD of any emotional response (Orth & Wieland, 2006), and roughly half of people with post-traumatic stress report episodes of aggression (Birkley & Schumm, 2016). The nervous system gets stuck in fight mode: tailgaters, slow drivers, even a partner’s question can trigger the same survival response that fired during the collision. EMDR targets the unprocessed crash memory so the threat signal switches off and the short fuse that came with it settles. ICBC pre-approves up to 12 counselling sessions in the first 12 weeks, no referral needed, and Samuel bills ICBC directly so you do not have to submit the claim yourself. Call 604-721-0604 for a free 20-minute consultation. See EMDR therapy in Vancouver.
I was a passenger in the crash — does ICBC still cover counselling for my anxiety?
Yes. ICBC’s Enhanced Care benefits cover all crash-involved persons, including passengers, pedestrians and cyclists — not only the driver. If you were in the vehicle during a collision in British Columbia and have a claim number, ICBC pre-approves up to 12 counselling sessions without a doctor’s referral, regardless of fault. Passengers often develop anxiety and PTSD at rates as high as or higher than drivers, because the lack of control during impact intensifies the sense of helplessness (Ehlers, Mayou & Bryant, 1998). Samuel bills ICBC directly so you do not have to submit the claim yourself. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Call 604-721-0604 for a free 20-minute consultation.
Does ICBC cover counselling if the accident was my fault?
Yes. ICBC’s Enhanced Care benefits are available regardless of who caused the crash. Counselling sessions with a registered clinical counsellor are pre-approved in the first 12 weeks, and no doctor’s referral is needed, only your claim number. Samuel bills ICBC directly. Read more in Guilt After Causing a Car Accident. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available.
I caused a crash and cannot stop replaying it. Is that normal?
It is a recognised trauma response. Replaying is the mind’s attempt to find the moment where things could have gone differently, and hindsight makes every warning sign look obvious. Samuel works on an accurate account of responsibility, uses EMDR to reduce the intensity of the images, and uses Internal Family Systems with the part that keeps punishing you. See counselling for at-fault drivers. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available.
My employer wants me back at work but I’m not ready after my car accident. Can ICBC counselling help?
Yes. Fear, pain and concentration problems after a crash often make returning to work harder than the physical injury alone explains. Negative recovery expectations and untreated PTSD independently predict prolonged work disability (Heron-Delaney et al., 2017). Samuel uses EMDR to reduce the intrusive memories and anxiety that interfere with concentration and confidence at work, and coordinates a graded return with your employer and ICBC recovery specialist. ICBC’s Enhanced Care provides income replacement at 90 percent of net income while you recover. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available. Read more: Returning to work after a car accident — counselling in Vancouver.
Is the ICBC claims process making my anxiety worse — and can counselling help with that?
Research shows that adversarial insurance processes can re-traumatize claimants independently of the original injury — a pattern researchers call secondary victimization. Feeling disbelieved, waiting months for decisions, and undergoing repeated medical assessments activate the same threat pathways the crash set off. Samuel helps clients separate claims-process distress from crash trauma so neither feeds the other, and he documents the psychological impact in clinical reports that support the claim itself. Fees may be covered, depending on eligibility, by ICBC, CVAP, FNHA, IFHP, RCMP, VAC, and most other insurers, and direct billing is available.

Start before the twelve weeks run out

The pre-approval window is 84 days from the crash. Starting inside it is easier clinically and simpler administratively. The first conversation is twenty minutes, free, in English or Farsi.
